Seismic Analysis of Multi-Storied Buildings with Even and Uneven Story Heights Under Symmetric and Unsymmetric Configurations

Seismic behavior for 15-story reinforced-concrete frame structures was examined on a variety of configuration geometries. The two buildings included in this study were G + 15 RCC frames One frame had a symmetrical floor plan and equal (even) story heights; the other frame had an unsymmetrical floor plan (unsymmetrical plan or irregular story heights) and was studied in ETABS 2018 using the Response Spectrum Method, per IS 1893:2016 (Zone IV). A comparison of key response characteristics, including total base shear, maximum displacement between stories, story shear and stiffness, in each direction X and Y, was conducted. The results indicated that the symmetrical, equal-height model exhibited the most beneficial seismic behavior. There is a more even distribution of drift, the torsional responses were minimal, and there is a more uniform distribution of overall stiffness and strength. The comparison of the results from the symmetric model and the unsymmetrical model showed exhibited poor responses to an earthquake. Our study found that the irregular case had increases in top-floor displacement of approximately 4-5% and increases in peak story drift of approximately 12% increases, when compared to the regular case. Thus, validating the use of response- spectrum analysis for comparative seismic evaluations of structures.
