This research explores the complexities surrounding the potential unification of Romania and Moldova within the European Union framework. The aim is to assess the feasibility of unification by examining historical, cultural, economic, and geopolitical factors that influence public sentiment and policy decisions. The central research question guiding this study is: What conditions must be satisfied for Romanian-Moldovan political unification to become feasible and sustainable? To address this question, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods. Historical analysis was conducted to understand the shared past of both nations, while public opinion surveys were utilized to gauge attitudes towards unification among citizens in Romania and Moldova. Economic impact assessments were performed to evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of integration, and geopolitical analyses were conducted to explore the implications of unification on regional stability and international relations. The findings reveal a complex landscape of perspectives on unification. Historical ties and cultural similarities foster a sense of shared identity among many Romanians, while some Moldovans express concerns about losing their national identity. Economically, unification presents opportunities for growth and development, but significant disparities between the two countries raise questions about sustainability. Geopolitically, unification could enhance Romania’s position within the EU but may also provoke tensions with external actors, particularly Russia. Overall, the research concludes that while the aspiration for unification exists, several critical conditions must be met to ensure its feasibility and sustainability. These include fostering mutual understanding, addressing economic disparities, and navigating the geopolitical landscape carefully. Engaging in open dialogue and collaborative efforts will be essential for both nations to explore the potential for a shared future while respecting their distinct identities and aspirations. This is the divided unity of the RO-MD pas de deux. Unification is not ripe, but there are quite a few things they could undertake to be better prepared for such a monumental event.
