A Century of Petrology: Enduring Debates, Emerging Frontiers

Abstract

Mohammad Ali Salimizand

Petrology, the cornerstone of Earth science, has undergone a profound transformation from qualitative description to quantitative modeling over the past hundred years. This review synthesizes the major historical controversies and recent advances across the three classical branches—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic petrology—and examines how novel tools such as big data analytics and machine learning are reshaping the discipline. The goal is to provide a conceptual roadmap for early-career researchers and a concise update for seasoned geoscientists.
