Longistylin A From Cajanus Cajan: A Bioactive Stilbene with Potent Antibacterial Potential

Longistylin A is a naturally occurring stilbene predominantly found in the leaves of Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea). It has attracted considerable attention due to its antibacterial, cytotoxic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. Among plant parts, leaves contain the highest concentration of Longistylin A, while roots and other tissues contain lower levels alongside phytochemicals such as betulinic acid, genistein, and cajanol. Isolated Longistylin A exhibits potent antibacterial activity, with minimum inhibitory concentrations in the low microgram per milliliter range. Despite relatively high crude extract yields (1.3–10% w/w), Longistylin A remains a minor constituent, typically obtained in milligram quantities after extensive purification. Environmental factors such as climate, geography, and harvesting stage significantly influence its biosynthesis. Standardization and further research are required to optimize its sustainable production and therapeutic applications. {128 words}
