Provenance Variation in The Nursery Performance of Indigenous Tree Species in Central Ethiopia

Indigenous trees are vital for ecosystem resilience and socioeconomic benefits in Ethiopia. This study aimed to select superior seed sources (provenances) of key species to enhance seedling health and growth. Seeds of economically important indigenous trees were collected from various locations and sown in a nursery.
Results revealed significant differences in growth among provenances for Cordia africana, Acacia abyssinica, Faidherbia albida, and Olea europaea. However, Podocarpus falcatus and Juniperus procera showed no significant difference in seedling biomass across sources. Consequently, specific provenances were recommended as superior seed sources: Wondo Genet for Cordia africana, Arbaminch Zuria for Acacia abyssinica, Durame Zuria for Podocarpus falcatus, and Wolayta for Faidherbia albida and Olea europaea. Selecting seeds from these areas is crucial for producing healthy, vigorous seedlings in central Ethiopia and similar agro-ecologies for afforestation and/or reforestation program. A field trial was not conducted due to resource constraints.
