When Trust Breaks: The Psychological Consequences of Infidelity and Betrayal
Abstract
Stephnie Hon and John Croucher
Cheating in a romantic context constitutes a major breach of ethical and relationship standards, causing considerable psychological damage to both perpetrators and victims. This paper considers the mental anguish and fallout associated with infidelity, as the necessary sustained deception conflicts with personal moral identities and creates internal tension. Emotional trauma, including guilt, shame, and anxiety, further increases distress, particularly due to fear of exposure and withdrawal from social support. The resulting consequences include relationship strain, reputational threat, and secretive behaviour, which can lead to depressive or anxiety disorders with associated stress. Results from several surveys are discussed, highlighting the extent to which cheating takes a significant toll on any relationship.
