Cardiovascular disease can refer to a number of conditions: Heart and blood vessel disease (also called heart disease) includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis. There is evidence that cardiovascular disease existed in pre-history, and research into cardiovascular disease dates from at least the 18th century. The causes, prevention, and/or treatment of all forms of cardiovascular disease remain active fields of biomedical research , with hundreds of scientific studies being published on a weekly basis. Surgical interventions such as coronary artery bypass and artificial pacemakers are available to treat patients with cardiovascular disease, though the treatments themselves may worsen the overall function of the heart.
