Dietary Approaches to Combat Coronary Artery Diseases (CADs): A Comprehensive Review
Abstract
Megersa Bayisa Debelo
Coronary artery diseases (CADs) are the leading cause of mortality globally, driven largely by modifiable risk factors, especially poor dietary patterns. Emerging evidence suggests that strategic dietary modifications can prevent, manage, and even reverse CAD progression. This review summarizes the role of major dietary patterns, macro- and micronutrient interventions, functional foods, and phytochemicals in combating CADs. Particular emphasis is placed on the Mediterranean diet, DASH diet, plant-based nutrition, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber-rich foods, and antioxidants. Mechanisms include lipid regulation, blood pressure control, anti-inflammatory and endothelial protective actions. The review concludes with practical dietary recommendations and future perspectives for personalized nutrition strategies.
